The Importance of Using Sage
The burning of sage has been used for centuries by many native cultures, from Asia, The Mayans and The First Nations People of North America. It should be used as a personal cleanser every single day as well as a way to cleanse your home and space which is acting like a barrier of protection, as well it does have healing properties. Sage is also a way to improve and increase the conductivity of our personal energy field. The following are some helpful tips on how to use sage.
Start a piece of sage on fire, (matches are the best but a lighter can be used) and blow out the fire. Have a little bit of smoke going. Take the smoke in your hands, guide it over your head, throw it over your shoulders, and down the entirety of your body. Use it to almost wash your hands, and then bring it into your internal being via the nose or mouth. If you are ill or have an ailment you can direct smoke to that area for healing.
*** Please note if you wear glasses, remove them while smudging and smudge your glasses by moving them in the smoke a little bit.
How To Use Sage in Your Home or Space
Have an amount of sage burning so you have a small amount of smoke going, place the sage in a safe burning container. First choice should be a shell like an abalone shell or a clam, a small metal bowl or you can invest in an actual sage carrier or burner. You want to move from room to room with your sage burning. You want to guide the smoke across the entirety of the windows in each room, as well as any air intake/outtake systems such as bathroom fans, attic doors. You also want to do your entry way or doors, porches etc. into your personal living space.
This is a protection from letting the negative into the positive space.
* Please note if you are a renter please check with your landlords as to whether or not you're in a non smoking space and if it's alright for you to burn sage for your spiritual practice.
